{"id":93,"date":"2015-09-10T16:05:44","date_gmt":"2015-09-10T16:05:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bjmklein.com\/?p=93"},"modified":"2015-09-10T16:07:11","modified_gmt":"2015-09-10T16:07:11","slug":"a-wunderkammer-for-the-new-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/benjaminjmansavageklei.apps-1and1.com\/?p=93","title":{"rendered":"A Wunderkammer for the New Year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the upcoming year, I will teach music theory and composition at Lawrence University. \u00a0 I am very excited to be back at the school where I completed my undergraduate degree, working some very important mentors of mine once again, particularly <a href=\"http:\/\/joannemetcalf.com\/\">Joanne Metcalf<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawrence.edu\/conservatory\/faculty\/gene_biringer\">Gene Biringer<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/improvcellist.com\/\">Matt Turner<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawrence.edu\/conservatory\/faculty\/martin_erickson\">Marty Erickson<\/a>. I also look forward to the opportunity of working with new colleagues, especially <a href=\"http:\/\/www.twocomposers.org\/\">Asha Srinivasan and Andrew Cole<\/a>. I am anxiously looking forward to working with the students here, advising them in their creative endeavors as well.<\/p>\n<p>In my own creative pursuits, it has always been important to me to make the space in which I create special in some way. \u00a0 I see my office here at Lawrence as that space. \u00a0In order to activate this creative space, I have\u00a0set up a Wunderkammer on my bookshelf. \u00a0Here is a picture:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/benjaminjmansavageklei.apps-1and1.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Wunderkammer.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-96\" src=\"http:\/\/benjaminjmansavageklei.apps-1and1.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Wunderkammer.jpg\" alt=\"Wunderkammer\" width=\"1383\" height=\"941\" srcset=\"https:\/\/benjaminjmansavageklei.apps-1and1.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Wunderkammer.jpg 1383w, https:\/\/benjaminjmansavageklei.apps-1and1.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Wunderkammer-300x204.jpg 300w, https:\/\/benjaminjmansavageklei.apps-1and1.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Wunderkammer-1024x697.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1383px) 100vw, 1383px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>My Wunderkammer contains objects that have personal significance for me. I find that reflecting on objects like these help to spark new ideas, or help my relax by meditating on the memory that an object might evoke. \u00a0Here is a list of what my Wunderkammer contains:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>4 glass containers holding folded metal and small pieces of hardware, these were used in my installation\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=xMJ36SXI2mc\">Voicebox<\/a><\/em><\/li>\n<li>2 tuba mouthpieces, and 2 trombone mouthpieces<\/li>\n<li>5 small music boxes<\/li>\n<li>A programmable Sankyo music box with accompanying paper, purchased at the\u00a0<i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.museumspeelklok.nl\/lang\/en\/\">Museum van Speelklok tot Pierement<\/a>\u00a0<\/i>in Utrecht<\/li>\n<li>A tin-type portrait of my tuba and me, taken at a concert in Minneapolis<\/li>\n<li>Pieces of metal that I used to build my sculpture\u00a0<em>Rotting Fruit<\/em><\/li>\n<li>A sketch that I completed in Tokyo<\/li>\n<li>A clipboard I used when I worked for the Census in 2010<\/li>\n<li>A piece of smoothed glass taken from the ocean in Uruguay by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5H2WwhNP7iw\">Marcelo Rilla<\/a><\/li>\n<li>An electric motor given to me by <a href=\"https:\/\/art.umn.edu\/people\/faculty\/dianewillow\">Diane Willow<\/a><\/li>\n<li>A choir stole made for me by Leah Bergman for the wedding of Matt Roen and Tony Spain<\/li>\n<li>A fan and coin purse given to me by <a href=\"http:\/\/akikohatakeyama.com\/\">Akiko Hatakeyama<\/a><\/li>\n<li>A Unidyne dynamic microphone, I found while working at the Holy Family School in Sheboygan, Wisconsin<\/li>\n<li>A Stylophone given to me by Myer Nore<\/li>\n<li>Illustrated library catalog cards completed in Hartford<\/li>\n<li>A note written to me by the pastor of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ercadam.nl\/\">English Reformed Church of Amsterdam<\/a><\/li>\n<li>My conducting baton<\/li>\n<li>Marker sketches for composition<\/li>\n<li>A christmas card from my Grandfather, Hilbert Klein<\/li>\n<li>A clam shell found on Cape Cod<\/li>\n<li>A square piece of quartz collected from Moon Lake, Wisconsin<\/li>\n<li>A ring cast by my father, James Klein<\/li>\n<li>An anonymous sketch of me playing tuba in London<\/li>\n<li>A rivet head collected while working at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.robodock.org\/\">Robodock<\/a> 2005 in Amsterdam<\/li>\n<li>A patch for the International Brotherhood of Electric Workers given to me by Barry Schwartz<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Incidentally <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ttbook.org\/book\/art-collection\">To the Best of Our Knowledge<\/a> <\/em>recently broadcasted a show that focused on collections like mine.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the upcoming year, I will teach music theory and composition at Lawrence University. \u00a0 I am very excited to be back at the school where I completed my undergraduate degree, working some very important mentors of mine once again, particularly Joanne Metcalf, Gene Biringer, Matt Turner, and Marty Erickson.
